This blog is about books and reading, and about sharing ideas about books people have enjoyed.
I’m not a literary critic, or even a book reviewer. I just like reading. But I also like to challenge myself to think out why I like one book better than another, and how writers draw me into their particular world.
Because I read for fun you’ll find most of the books I want to talk about are on the popular rather than the literary side. But there’s room for anyone and anything to do with books, so please feel free to raise the tone.
To narrow down your search for your next book, you can browse by the following categories:
- Author Profiles
- Books into Film
- Children and Teens
- Crime Fiction
- Fantasy
- Historical Fiction
- Literary Fiction
- Man Booker Prize
- Non-Fiction
- Romance Fiction
- Spy Fiction

Book Clubs
Lots of readers who enjoy sharing their thoughts about books are already in a book club. But if you’re not, and you’d like to start your own, here’s some ideas on how to go about it.
I enjoy knowing something of the history of the sort of books I like to read. You can look at my brief history of the following genres, and see what has changed and what stays the same:
There’s also some information about the way the Booker Prize for literature has evolved over the years.
I’ve also put down my thoughts on some of the writers from the above genres, and on some of their best known or most characteristic books. Some people are happy just to read the book, but I like to know something about the writer, so you’ll find information about their lives, and where relevant, about how life and writing interact.
I hope you enjoy my blog and you keep coming back every time you would like to know ‘what book to read’!

Hiya, I just downloaded a novel called Theft of Hearts and I’m trying to find out whether you have reviewed it because like you I LOVE reading and sharing my thoughts on a book. Have you heard of the author LB Bacchus? If so is she an author to watch because so far it’s been a book that has gripped me ‘hence’ the reason I want to chat about it. Ps I LOVE your reviews and thank you, you have made it easier for me to pick a few books to read out of hundreds! 🙂
My name is Samuel Bagby and I am an independent author. I have a novel entitled Lily: An American Fable which is offered for sale on Amazon Kindle Store. I am writing to inquire if you might consider reviewing the novel for your website. The plot runs something like this:
Stephen Flashman is a womanizer who’s been using his relationships for sex all his life. But there are two women who leave an indelible mark upon Flashman’s life, two women whose memory he somehow cannot lay to rest in a sea of forgettable conquests. Diane Densher is one of those women: she is incredibly smart, savvy and ambitious, an Ivy League graduate and a successful executive with a budding career on Wall Street: when she breaks up with Flashman he treats it like just another breakup, but deep down her rejection of him conjures forth a terrible nagging feeling that he could not keep her because she recognized him as a failure and unworthy to be her mate, and he is tormented by the need to win her back. Noelle Cummings is just the opposite of her ambitious and serious-minded predecessor: she is a free spirit from her head to her toes, carried along by an insatiable zest to live each day as if it were her last; she casts a wistful light into Flashman’s bleak inner world. After breaking up with Noelle, Flashman is torn between his affections for both women when Noelle reveals to him that she is pregnant with his child, but is anxious and fearful about raising a child on her own; she tells Flashman that she is thinking of terminating the pregnancy.
For Flashman it is the moment which sears his heart: with Diane—”the one who got away”—showing signs of renewed interest, should he continue to give chase to her, or should he devote his energies to Noelle and do all he can to ensure the birth of his child, while knowing his life will never be the same again?
On the surface of things Lily may appear to be similar to many contemporary romance plots: it isn’t. It is rather the portrayal of an inner search for meaning, for fulfillment, for belonging by a man whose past has ill-equipped him to find them, whose culture provides him with a template for happiness which ultimately leaves him at a loss. Certainly it is the eloquence and beauty of a prose style which in many respects sets literary fiction apart from other types: accordingly I would invite you to simply take a minute and peruse a few excerpts on the novel’s Kindle page, to see if they spark something in you that drives you to read on and engage the text. Lily is a short work of fiction, a quick read paced all the way through with humor and pathos, and sporting a rather wicked twist at the very end.
The product page on Amazon is: http://www.amazon.com/Lily-An-American-Fable-ebook/dp/B008RD7ITS/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1343934226&sr=1-1&keywords=Lily%3A+An+American+Fable
The novel’s Goodreads page is: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15826843-lily-an-american-fable
I would love for you to do a review of the novel if possible; if you’re willing I would also appreciate the opportunity to do a blogpost or some kind of promotion with you. I’d be happy to provide you with either a paperback copy of the novel or an e-book, please inform me as to which you prefer. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you in the future.

re: book review request by award-winning author
Dear What Book to Read?
I’m an award-winning author with a new book of fiction out this fall. Ugly To Start With is a series of thirteen interrelated stories about childhood published by West Virginia University Press.
Can I interest you in reviewing it?
If you write me back at johnmcummings@aol.com, I can email you a PDF of my book. If you require a bound copy, please ask, and I will forward your reply to my publisher. Or you can write directly to Abby Freeland at:
Abby.Freeland@mail.wvu.edu
My publisher, I should add, can also offer your readers a free excerpt of my book through a link from your blog to my publisher’s website:
http://wvupressonline.com/cummings_ugly_to_start_with_9781935978084
Here’s what Jacob Appel, celebrated author of
Dyads and The Vermin Episode, says about my new collection: “In Ugly to Start With, set in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Cummings tackles the challenges of boyhood adventure and family conflict in a taut, crystalline style that captures the triumphs and tribulations of small-town life. He has a gift for transcending the particular experiences to his characters to capture the universal truths of human affection and suffering–emotional truths that the members of his audience will recognize from their own experiences of childhood and adolescence.”
My short stories have appeared in more than seventy-five literary journals, including North American Review, The Kenyon Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, and The Chattahoochee Review. Twice I have been nominated for The Pushcart Prize. My short story “The Scratchboard Project” received an honorable mention in The Best American Short Stories 2007.
I am also the author of the nationally acclaimed coming-of-age novel The Night I Freed John Brown (Philomel Books, Penguin Group, 2009), winner of The Paterson Prize for Books for Young Readers (Grades 7-12) and one of ten books recommended by USA TODAY.

Thank you very much, and I look forward to hearing back from you.
Kindly,
John Michael Cummings
I would be delighted if you could review one or more of my three novels, all of which are available as e-books on amazon.com and smashwords.com
The three books are in quite different genres and I hope that you will find at least one that tempts you to give it a read. I give below their titles and a brief description. I am the author and my name is GERVASE SHORTER. There is a bio on my Amazon and Smashwords author pages. I´m afraid I have no website or GoodReads page yet.
‘Crime Fiction for Beginners’ (light whodunit 71,152 words)’: Attractive, blonde Detective Inspector Harriet Ware of the Met is assigned to investigate the murder of Larry Barlow, a publisher found strangled in a Whitechapel alleyway. Press reports of the murder alert three authors who are bitterly resentful of Larry’s arrogant rejection of their manuscripts. All are connected in some way with the mystery of his death. They are:
Maud Jackson, who is writing romantic Regency fiction about how the aristocratic Lady Cynthia Cavendish-Harcourt foils the matrimonial intrigues of Jocelyne Bracegirdle, a nouveau riche rival.
Hector Treadgold is writing a science fiction epic in which the last survivors from Earth are making their way through space to the planet they mean to colonise, fighting off reptilian robots from the Ozkon empire en route.
Juliet Transom writes about her heroine Lohana’s adventures and mystical experiences in former and future lives.
A fourth author, Gregory Scofield, is rewriting a cold war thriller he wrote in the 80s.
As the murder investigation proceeds, Harriet interviews Larry’s partners, wife, lawyer, mistress and wife’s uncle and tries to guess what crucial information they are hiding. She reviews the autopsy and scene of the crime reports but they provide few clues. Then there is Larry’s file of threats and hate letters. Were some of them written by disgruntled would-be authors or by someone else? Meanwhile, her assistant Jim Rose searches for the Chinese restaurant where Larry had dinner shortly before he was murdered.
But, in this world of would-be writers, all is very far from being what it seems …
‘Prince Korasoff´s Road Map’ (Romance 61,598 words) : Edward Hayes is a lonely widower. Albertine Sinclair, who is single and 38, is writing a doctoral thesis on Stendhal. They get to know each other by sight at the library where they work and start to feel an attraction for each other but both are too shy to make a first move.
Albertine’s friend Tabitha creates a fake internet dating agency to bring them together and when she has set it in motion she lets Albertine into the secret. Tabitha leads Edward through a series of three meetings with Albertine on each of which he sends a report back to Tabitha who, unknown to Edward, sends it on to Albertine. Little by little, Edward and Albertine feel more at ease with each other, discover mutual interests and sympathies to the point where, independently, they both feel sufficiently self confident to carry on without Tabitha´s help.
Their romance begins to blossom but neither of them can foresee a crisis that is waiting to happen and threatens to destroy their relationship completely.
‘A Feeling in My Bones’ (thriller 87,318 words): Jake Forrester, is recruited by Harvey Baum, a Miami based business associate, to carry out an assignment for Cyrus Kroger, a reclusive billionaire, at his heavily guarded property in the Catskills. In a series of emails to his wife Sally, Jake describes his increasingly close friendship with the septuagenarian Kroger but Jake suddenly disappears and Baum says he is out of contact, visiting Kroger´s operations in Central Africa. Shortly after Jake´s disappearance Baum phones Sally to say Kroger has fallen ill and died and then, a month later, he phones again, this time to say Jake is back in Miami but in a clinic suffering from a nervous breakdown.
Sally flies to Miami and brings Jake home. She notices there are no visas or stamps in his passport indicating a visit to Central Africa. Jake gradually returns to normal but his relationship with Sally does not regain its old warmth. Whatever happened in the month Jake disappeared brings him vast wealth but Sally is worried because she finds he is growing increasingly nervous and suspicious.
Sally and Jake start getting used to being extremely rich. She finds she is leaving her old life and friends behind. They move into a Park Lane penthouse and there Sally makes a discovery that brings her whole world crashing down. She starts investigating and what she discovers makes her afraid for her life.
Please use the ‘Look Inside’ feature on Amazon to see whether my style of writing is up to your standards. If you can fit one or more of my books into your reviewing schedule please let me know and I will send you an e-copy, either a pdf file or a gift download.
Yours sincerely,
Gervase Shorter

My name is Joe Rinaldo, and I have published an ebook entitled, A Spy At Home. I would be most grateful if you would review it for your blog. I’ll provide a free copy for you to read in Word, pdf, or html format, whichever you prefer.
Garrison’s story begins when he retires from the CIA. In retirement Garrison shares the pain he inflicted on his family during his life abroad. Noah, Garrison’s adult son with Down syndrome, a form of mental retardation, doesn’t trust dad when he returns home. Experience has taught Noah that dad always leaves again. Over time they grow closer.
Louisa, Garrison’s wife, gradually accepts her husband back; however, accepting him as her husband and trusting him with her child present two separate obstacles.
Tragedy strikes, and Louisa dies. Garrison becomes solely responsible for Noah, who has developed Alzheimer’s, common in aging people with Down syndrome. This disease tears at Garrison’s heart. Noah ceases to be himself and relives a life his dad knew nothing about.
Thank you for considering A Spy At Home. If you are willing to review my book, please email me at rinald47@gmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi there,
My name is Nadine Rose Larter and I am a new author. My first book will be available in print very soon and I am looking for a few book review bloggers who would be willing to accept my ebook in exchange for a review.
I know you must have a ton of books on your nightstand already (I know I do!) but if you would just consider what a hugely good karma inducing act of good will this would be I would be forever grateful and massively in your debt. You will find the blurb below.
Please contact me if you are interested.
Thanks for your time,
Nadine
Coffee at Little Angels by Nadine Rose Larter
“Phillip, Sarah, Kaitlyn, Caleb, Maxine, Grant, Melanie and Josh grew up in a small town where they spent their high school years together as an inseparable clique. But high school has ended, and they are all living their own “grown up” lives, each under the impression that their group has basically come to an end. When Phillip dies in a hit and run accident, Kaitlyn summons the others to all come back home, forcing a reunion that no one is particularly interested in partaking in.
Coffee at Little Angels follows how each character deals with the death of a childhood friend while at the same time dealing with their own ignored demons after years of separation. Events unfold as the group tries to rekindle the friendship they once shared to honour the memory of a friend they will never see again.”
Hi,
Since you have a ‘spy fiction’ section I thought you’d like to know about Bloomsbury’s new Stella Rimington website, http://www.stellarimington.com.Read the latest news on Stella Rimington’s books, explore an interactive map of featured locations, watch exclusive video interviews with the author, and discover more about the characters. This is the first and only website to be dedicated to the bestselling spy novelist and former director general of MI5.
I hope you enjoy it!
